Reflection on Purple Hibiscus

Purple Hibiscus reminds us of our own culture and heritage?

What makes you uniquely Jamaican? Do you and your family perform any cultural ritual often? Explain? How has this made you a better person?

    1. Place of Birth,
My place of birth in this lovely island, my love of our language and unique culture that allows me to appreciate all persons from all walks of life. The resilience that has been pasted down to me from my ancestors, the vigor to never and give up and the tenacity to face and overcome the challenges of life, and the bubbly personality that enables me to start up a conversation with anyone in any situation.

Going to a set up every once in awhile, telling proverbs, drinking tea every morning, praying the food.
these instill different values in my life a set up allowed me to appreciate the celebration of the of life that has pass on and this allows this period to not only be a time of mourning but of joy, laughter, families and coming together, the proverbs always had a moral lesson that will follow me throughout my life it's not just that but the fact they are said in our lovely language it helps to preserve our culture, the daily tea is just a lovely routine and it establishes discipline, as a God fairing country it is only given that we would have such a ritual but it was not only for us but we pray that if there was a passer by they could have a meal.

  2. My exposure and appreciation for the various ethnicities and their cultures , food and religion is what makes me uniquely Jamaican.

The Indian side of my family before corona would annually attend Diwali and other festivals because some of my family are Hindi and some have just retained that part of their culture . I do believe it has made me and my siblings better people as we have learnt to not be tolerant of their religion but learnt to respect it. Even though I am Catholic these annual festivals have made me learn that differences aren't bad and integration is sometimes necessary.

  3. Purple Hibiscus in some aspects reminds me of my own culture and heritage as it relates to the actions and interactions of the people. My family and I perform some cultural rituals, in the form of eating rice and peas on a Sunday, and a few others. This has made me a better person as it helps me to identify with my country's culture. What makes me uniquely Jamaican is that I can be identified as a Citizen of Jamaica, together with my love for Jamaican food and the language of Patois.

  4. What makes me uniquely Jamaican is the way I speak, my culture or traditions. Once cultural ritual my family does is make Christmas cake every year, make chocolate from scratch, Make blue draws and pudding and toto. Well it made me more in tune with the ways of my ancestors

  5. My other grandmother who is one of those authentic black women believe tea is the cure for everything so I would seldom pretend to be sick because bush tea without sugar is not nice . So it did make me a better person because I stopped lying about being sick from primary school days.

  6. What makes me uniquely Jamaican? I'm not sure but for sure I'm Jamaican. I will tell you what makes me an odd Jamaican. I don't like ackees, jerked chicken, pork, porridge, rundung, manish water, celebrations, reggae, I listen to dancehall but not so much, I don't know the parishes the National Heros were born in, I don't believe in the buku yakka stories and so on. On the other hand, I do like beer, the beaches and the overall vibe. My family doesn't broadly practise or perform any cultural ritual but from time to time we play luddu on Sundays, drink soup on Saturdays and learn how to use the coal stove.

    1. Our culture is really diverse and rich and you know what is funny about it we take other traditions and mixed it with ours and made it our own

  9. What makes me uniquely Jamaican...Everything about me really, from my speech to food to my way of dress. My way of life makes me Jamaican because that's what I was taught from a tender age and it is the norm in the Jamaican society. My native tongue, Patois, can be heard in my speech it may not be fluent but anywhere I go it will be there or even just my Jamaican accent. Yes, my family perform cultural ritual every year during Christmas, Easter and Lent. During the Christmas my family always go to church (not saying we don't go to church regularly), have rice and gungo peas, sorrel juice and fruit cake on the menu and have family members over. During Easter there is always bun and cheese. Not a single Easter has passed where there is no bun and cheese. For Lent each persons fast for however long the wishes to as not everyone can endure hunger for too long and we each would give up something that we love dearly. The Lent season has made me a better person in the sense that I'm able to appreciate what I have as I don't know when it can be taken away. Christmas has developed festive spirit in me, kindness and togetherness with my loved ones so that I'm not selfish. My household is one where every Sunday is rice and peas and going to church or listening to the live church services whenever we are able to go to church. We don't only worship the Lord on a Sunday but everyday even if it is just a word of prayer or listening to gospel music so that we have time for God no matter how busy we are.

  10. What separates me and my family is the way we communicate; because my family is Trinidadian, we communicate in Trinidad creole  to each other. Every year, we celebrate Carnival by hosting a large feast and dressing up in costumes and dancing.
